Listen to Craig’s take on what volunteering has meant for him-
Hi, my name is Craig and I have been volunteering at The Bevy pub since August 2021. I moved to Brighton in June after deciding to make some changes to my life and career. I first got involved with the Bevy Meals on Wheels when one of my neighbours shared that there was space for volunteers to help out. Since then, I’ve been volunteering weekly in the kitchen for Bevy Meals on Wheels and the Friday Friends club. I’ve also been involved in the Saturday markets, manning a stall to sell locally sourced products.
Getting involved at The Bevy has helped me keep structure in my life while I’m taking time off and has also been a great way to meet people and feel connected to the new community that I’ve moved to. As I used to work in the food industry it feels amazing to be able to use my interest and passion for food to do something that has such a positive impact on my local community, which is something I haven’t felt before. The experience so far has helped me think about how I want to find purpose in my future work while I reevaluate what I want to do next career-wise. I would definitely recommend others to get involved at The Bevy or other local initiatives as you’ll be amazed how only a few hours a week can meaningfully contribute to others’ well-being and bring a sense of purpose to your own life.
